Well this isn't new with immigration. When my mother died during my final step as permanent residents which was granted with citizenship, I was deprived to go to her funeral or I would lose my immigration proceedings in California. I would have to start all over but from France. I was married to an American woman and had a son... it didn't matter in the eyes of immigration services. INS never been a cool place to deal with... The big difference, is that they didn't have goons in civilian cloth kidnapping you on the street and make you disappear.

I had a friend whose wife, 25 years ago, was married for a considerable time already to a US citizen and thought it meant she was here legally (she married while she was legally here on a visa). She went to her mom's funeral in Colombia and couldn't get back in. It took over a year and umpty attorney fees just to get her home.
