My family and I are fighting. My 9th grade grandson left class (with parental permission), to march against the administration. He and his peers walked 3 miles.

My front lawn is beginning to look like the United Nations. I have a Canada flag and a Mexico flag standing next to my resistance placard. my Ukraine flag is ordered and in the process of being delivered. Looking for a Panamanian flag, and will be ordering a Palestinian flag later today.

I am newly disabled, and look forward to regaining my mobility so I can get out there and march with my kids and grandkids again. We can do this! We can destroy the fascist monster as it chews through our democracy. These illegal actions will not stand!

Oh, I hope you have a good doctor and treatments. VA abandoned me and now I'm permanently disabled, struggling for any activity, which I can reach with procedures and medications. It's a 30 year old high-impact horse accident. My spine is bone on bone. I begged to be stabilized when there was considerable disc material still there. They refused and decided to not acknowledge it as a mechanical problem and instead wanted to treat it as mental health. The mri said a different story. Best wishes for a full recovery.

I'm so very sorry, Madison Native. I get riled up every time I hear about injuries ascribed to mental health when there's a clear physical cause. It's not all in your head! Sending you thoughts of strength. Take care.

Thank you, kindly, Michele. 8 greatly appreciate that validation. People who've experienced medical gaslighting should go to their local library and request "Medical Gaslighting: How to Get the Care You Deserve in a System that Makes You Fight For Your Life," by Ilana Jacqueline. It's as if the author interviewed me for this book. I've filed complaints with the state licensing board.

True, but standing up, strong and loud, is our biggest hope for not becoming an Oligarchy/Monarchy/Dictatorship, led by a racist coward from South Africa. Lucky Africa, he came to spew his hate/nazi crap, in the United States of America. We left kings and queens. :)

I find it fascinating that the states - their governors and attorneys general - are the ones who are loudest at not just standing up but taking action against The Tangerine Twit & the Space Nazi. Congress is mostly little wimps who either are under the threat of blackmail or, more likely, afraid that if they don't kiss TTT's butt they'll either lose out on piles of money or wind up in a gulag. Or both.

Every time TTT calls Trudeau "governor" I think, yeah, if he was actually a governor of a US state he'd be stomping all over TTT while wearing hockey skates. The states may be what leads the way out of this mess. Clearly we can't depend on Congress.

I don’t even think it’s fair to say “again” because what we’re experiencing now is 4 years of planning from a criminal & vile humans. “This” is unlike anything we experienced in his first term. They were ready to immediately enact a systematic overthrow of our entire government, policies, agencies, norms & American ideals. If Dems or just sane Americans in power don’t step the hell up, it’s going to be like the fall of Rome, in real time.

Expand full comment
Valerie Rounds-Atkinson's avatar

Yep. I always thought Joe would resign at the beginning of his last quarter and let Kamala demonstrate how well she could govern, but I guess there were other considerations

Expand full comment
Richard Warren's avatar

I should think that among the "other considerations" was or should have been the consideration of presenting an electable Democratic candidate in 2024 - one that could inspire voters to vote FOR him/her and avoiding a rehashing of the 2020 slogan that "at least he is not Trump." That is essentially a campaign based on voting AGAINST someone. Anybody with at least some exposure to Political Science 101 knows that the memory of voters is very short. Expecting voters to remember the horrors of Trump's first term and, therefore, be persuaded by a campaign that keyed in on being against Trump, without much emphasis on reasons to vote FOR the Democratic candidate, was doomed to failure, regardless of who the candidate was. Kamala's ability to govern (which was far above average for a presidential candidate, by the way) was not the determinative issue. It was her ability to inspire voters to vote FOR her, her ability to excite the rank and file into action. Given time, she might have developed into a formidable candidate. But she did not have the luxury enough time for that. Frankly, I put a lot of the blame for that on the Democratic Party and President Biden's political strategists. It should have been a non-publicized understanding back in 2020 that he would serve only one term and would not seek re-election in 2024. That would have given Kamala and other viable Democrats four years to prepare for the inevitable rematch with Trump.

Expand full comment
Richard Warren's avatar

She may have also had a blistering fastball coming down the pike at her, in addition to those 2 strikes. Said fastball being one that if she miscalculated and let it go by or if she swung and missed, she'd be out. Namely a sizeable number of Democrats who felt that President Biden had been treated unfairly and given an undeserved bum's rush off the stage - Democrats (and Independents) who resented that and had resolved to sit out the election because of it. When VP Harris accepted the role of replacement candidate, she should have been better prepared to deal with that resentment and should have had a better strategy for persuading them to put those feelings aside and support her despite their misgivings.

I personally think there was fraud. I’ve been following some of the analysts (I just restacked a really good one). All the swing states strangely went to Trump but many democrats down ballot won. That RARELY happens - and I suspect tabulation manipulation. But the left is so aware of not wanting to act like MAGA in 2020. Sounds like a lot of analysis happening quietly until/IF they have a strong enough case.

Also, at least one pro democracy group, that is unhappy with both major parties were planning to do exactly what Jenn has described. Vote Trump, but democrats down ballot and force both parties to face each other and fight it out - believing that each party will be a check on the other. So maybe that’s what has happened. I hope I am wrong, it seems so dangerous

I haven’t heard of people doing that - especially at a level consistently sufficient to put him over the top in each swing state. But anything is possible. Honestly this is the first time I’ve even mentioned fraud out loud bc I don’t want to behave the way MAGA did in 2020. Something just nags at me about the results. People will find their spines as the opposition mobilizes and they have a place to focus their energies, the Trump/Musk/Putin axis becomes more of a visible enemy in our midst (even to those in corporate media trying hard not to notice), and the economy starts to tank as Americans and global investors lose faith in the economic underpinnings of a nation run by corrupt and incompetent criminals, con-men, and traitors.

Start heating up the tar and gathering the feathers required to give your local Banana Republican the painful new outfit they've earned through the betrayal of their obligations to the constitution and their constituents.

The Freddie Krueger Keystone Cops are going so far as to break some trump swamp fever of maga cultists who were blided by the orange glow. With last week a recess for the House to "work in the district", some Dem Reps did hold town halls. Some is not enough. It should have been ALL Dem Reps holding many town halls in their districts every day. Meanwhile Jeffries was in Chicago on a book tour when he should have been holding town halls as well. LEAD the Reps. Instead, it's an 83 year old Senator (Bernie Sanders) who is hosting them and thousands showed up so that they had to change the venue and, even when changed and overflow was accommodated, there was still a long line of people who couldn't get in. Shame to any Democratic Rep who did not hold them. Call them and ask them why!

We live in the United States of Amnesia. I've concluded that a vast cross-section of Americans have failed to grasp how closely our national predicament mirrors that of the Third Reich. Many folks on the right cannot conceive of the imminent crises we face; they dismiss warnings from the left for being "alarmists." To save democracy, it is paramount that we do our utmost to educate the ignorant masses. The lessons of the Third Reich horrors must be shouted from the roof-tops.
