It was a 20th century racist classification system—codified into law in some states—that assigned mixed-race individuals to the racial category that was considered the lower-status group. If you had one Black ancestor (“one drop” of “Black blood”) you were Black. Now the racists want it the other way around—because it’s politically expedient for them—and are claiming that mixed-race or ethically mixed people have no right to identify as they choose. What hogwash. Hypocrites!!
